You’ve decided to look into options for homeschooling your child(ren). It’s exciting. As you have been your child’s teacher since the day of their birth, you know your child’s likes, dislikes, interests, temperament, personality, and how they like to learn. All you need to know now is what options are best suited for your family.
Thankfully in Alberta, the homeschooling community is flourishing, giving families more choices with regards to program selection, and what form they want their program to take.
Online Education – Grades 1-12
While one might also appreciate a specified space for learning, online education requires a computer and an internet connection first and foremost, allowing your children to connect with their teacher and class in a teacher-directed remote learning environment. Teachers are Alberta certified and will follow the Alberta Programs of Studies.
Home Education – Grades 1-12
For the most parent direction, a home education program allows parents to select the learning objectives, curriculum, teaching methods, and assessment. Depending on a parents’ values and beliefs, this program can take many different forms. A teacher will be assigned to your family to support you with program planning assistance. To support your home education journey, this teacher will conduct a minimum of two visits per school year. Parents can choose learning objectives that may or may not follow the Alberta Program of Studies.
Shared Responsibility Program – Grades 1-9
This program has been pioneered by The Center for Learning@HOME to help parents and teachers better collaborate on developing and administering a learning program for the student, ensuring that it follows the parents’ wishes and priorities while maintaining educational standards. This program includes a mixture of home education and online courses.
All three of the program options are provided through The Center for Learning@HOME, allowing parents to determine which home education philosophy best suits their family.
